Tailored children's dental services
At Buderim Family Dental we understand every child is unique. Our team takes that tailored approach to children's dentistry in Buderim, serving families from Mooloolaba, Maroochydore and Alexandra Headland.
Risk of decay extends beyond the teeth alone. Thumb sucking, mouth breathing, snoring and tongue tie can all affect the eruption pattern and alignment of your child's teeth — and early intervention helps prevent complications before they arise.
Our initial consultations are designed to be welcoming and stress-free. We deliberately limit the first visit to a simple check-up and gentle polish so your child feels comfortable.
Why families choose us for their children
Choosing the right clinic can shape how your child feels about oral hygiene for life. We focus on care that respects the needs of younger patients in a calm, unhurried setting, and we take time to understand your child's comfort level and pace.
We don't take a one-size-fits-all approach. That might mean longer introductions, familiar toys or language, or shorter sessions — whatever suits your child.

What we take into account
- Your child's age and stage of dental development
- Their previous experiences with dentistry, if any
- Parental input on routines, habits or challenges
- Any relevant health considerations or sensitivities
How we set up the room
- Minimising intimidating sights and sounds
- Child-appropriate explanations and demonstrations
- Distractions such as storybooks or visual aids
- Extra time wherever it helps ease anxiety
Gentle & friendly care for children
Children form lasting impressions of healthcare settings early, so our clinic keeps a welcoming, low-pressure atmosphere. Dentistry for children is about more than treating teeth — it's about helping young people feel safe, seen and respected.
The dental chair can seem unfamiliar, so rather than rushing we let children explore first. They might sit on a parent's lap, play with a mirror, or watch how the equipment works before anything clinical begins.
When treatment is needed we explain each step in simple language, avoid overwhelming terminology and encourage questions or breaks. Cooperation gets acknowledged — with a high five, a sticker or plenty of praise.

A proactive & preventative approach
Longevity in your child's dental health begins with thorough assessment and the right treatments. We use dental x-rays to understand their oral health in depth — and to gauge how well your child adapts to new procedures.
Our range includes oral examinations, protective fissure sealants, fillings, pulp treatments and custom-fitted mouthguards for children active in sport.
You'll leave with a clear understanding of your child's dental health, any potential future needs and a tailored recall period. Call us on (07) 5356 9599 to arrange an appointment.
What to expect during your child's visit
A child's first few visits often set the tone for how they view oral healthcare later. Here's what a typical appointment looks like.
- STEP 1
Initial introductions
We meet your child in a friendly, non-clinical way — chatting about their day, showing them around the treatment room and introducing the tools they might see.
- STEP 2
Medical & dental history
We'll ask about teething and eruption timelines, habits like thumb-sucking or dummy use, diet and sugar intake, and any previous dental or medical visits.
- STEP 3
Oral examination
A gentle exam checks tooth alignment, gum health and overall development — whether baby teeth are erupting on time, any signs of decay or wear, and how the bite and jaw are growing.
- STEP 4
Preventive services
If your child is comfortable, we clean gently with soft instruments. Fluoride treatments or fissure sealants may be suggested — always discussed first and applied only with your consent.
Home care guidance
We send you home with practical, age-appropriate advice:
- Demonstrating proper brushing technique
- Flossing alternatives for small mouths
- Toothbrush and paste recommendations by age
- Bedtime routines that include oral hygiene
You'll also know when to come back — regular check-ups are the most effective way to stay ahead of any issues.
About the Child Dental Benefits Schedule
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) is an Australian government initiative providing financial support for basic dental services for eligible children aged 0–17. It covers check-ups, x-rays, cleaning, fissure sealing, fillings, root canals and extractions.
The program offers up to $1,052 over two years for each eligible child, usable at public or private clinics that participate in Medicare. To qualify, children must be eligible for Medicare and their family must receive certain government payments, such as Family Tax Benefit Part A.

The Australian Dental Association recommends a first dental visit when the first tooth becomes visible or by 12 months of age, whichever comes first. An early visit establishes a dental home, lets us check for early signs of issues, and gives us a chance to show parents the right oral hygiene techniques.
-
Talk about what to expect in a positive, age-appropriate way. Children's books about going to the dentist help, as does playing pretend dentist at home. Avoid negative words that might create fear, and schedule the appointment for a time when your child is rested and more likely to be cooperative.
-
Primary teeth are important for early development. They allow proper chewing and eating, hold space for the permanent teeth and guide them into position, and support the development of the jaw bones and muscles. They also play a crucial role in speech. Caring for them prevents decay and infections that cause pain and can affect the permanent teeth.
-
Establish a good routine early: brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste (a smear under age 2, a pea-sized amount from 2–6), flossing daily once teeth touch, and limiting sugary snacks and drinks.
Regular check-ups let us monitor oral health and apply preventive treatments such as fluoride varnish and sealants. Encourage healthy eating and plenty of tap water, which in much of Australia contains the optimal level of fluoride.
-
Generally every six months. That frequency supports early detection and treatment of potential issues, and helps children grow familiar with the dental environment so future visits feel less daunting.
-
It covers preventative measures such as cleanings, fluoride treatments and sealants; orthodontic evaluation and early intervention for alignment issues; management of dental emergencies; and restorative treatments like fillings and crowns suited to young, developing teeth.
-
Talk about visits positively and avoid sharing your own dental fears. Books or shows that portray the dentist in a friendly light help. A preliminary visit with no appointment pressure lets your child get used to the environment and the staff — and choosing a dentist known for patience with anxious children makes a real difference.
