Wisdom tooth assessment & imaging
At Buderim Family Dental we approach wisdom teeth removal with a focus on thorough evaluation and precision. Wisdom teeth are the last set of teeth to develop, and can cause problems when they are misaligned or impacted.
Our dental team provides a comprehensive examination to assess their condition. X-ray imaging shows their positioning within the jaw and their proximity to nerves and other structures, which lets our team plan the most effective, least invasive approach for your case.

When wisdom teeth cause trouble
Wisdom teeth are the last set to develop, usually in the late teens or early twenties. Some emerge normally; others become impacted or misaligned. If any of these sound familiar, book an assessment.
Pain and swelling
Impacted teeth that can't emerge fully often cause pain, swelling and infection of the surrounding gum tissue.
Crowding and damage
Wisdom teeth can push against and damage adjacent teeth, and contribute to crowding at the back of the arch.
Harder hygiene
Partly erupted teeth are difficult to clean around, raising the risk of decay and gum disease.
Cysts around the tooth
In some cases cysts or tumours form around impacted teeth, which can damage the jaw and require more complex treatment.
Minimally invasive extraction & aftercare
Extraction is carried out with care for your comfort and to promote fast healing. The procedure involves local anaesthesia, making it pain free and easing anxiety.
Our commitment to modern, minimally invasive surgical technique reduces the risk of complications and shortens recovery time. Afterwards, our team provides post-operative care instructions to support a smooth, swift recovery.

Managing wisdom teeth without removal
Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out. Some can be managed with good dental hygiene, regular check-ups, a balanced diet and — where appropriate — over-the-counter pain relief and desensitising products.
Staying on top of any issues helps prevent damage to adjacent teeth, makes cleaning easier and reduces the risk of infection and gum disease. At your assessment we'll tell you honestly which path suits your situation.

-
Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last set of teeth to develop, typically emerging in the late teenage years or early adulthood. They sit at the back corners of the mouth on both the top and bottom arches.
For some people they come in normally and align well with the other teeth. Many others experience complications — such as impaction or misalignment — that call for removal.
-
The most common reason is impaction: the teeth don't have enough room to emerge from the gums and develop normally. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, swelling and infection of the surrounding gum tissue.
They can also damage adjacent teeth and contribute to crowding, making hygiene more challenging. In some cases cysts or tumours form around them, with the potential for significant jaw damage and more complex treatment.
-
Removal is a surgical procedure performed under local anaesthesia, sedation or general anaesthesia, depending on the complexity of the case and your preference. An incision in the gum tissue exposes the tooth and bone, and any bone blocking access to the root is removed before the tooth comes out.
The site is then cleaned of debris from the bone or tooth, the wound is stitched, and gauze is placed over the site to control bleeding and help a blood clot form.
-
Recovery usually takes a few days. Immediately afterwards you may have swelling, mild discomfort and some bleeding — pain medication and ice packs help manage both. Rest and avoid strenuous activity for the first 24–48 hours.
Stick to soft foods and avoid smoking or using a straw, which can dislodge the clot from the socket. Keep up oral hygiene but avoid vigorous brushing near the extraction site. We'll give you specific instructions for your case.
